Dear Sir,
Sub: Preparation and Publishing of Eco-Products Directory of India
In the national and international business environment there are ongoing efforts towards achieving sustainable production and consumption scenarios, whereby governments, firms, and consumers are transitioning to adopt various eco-labeling initiatives (designated Type I, II or III, depending on the nature and framework of criterion developed, and in cognition of eco-friendly features being focused upon etc) and which are gaining popularity and enabling creation of newer green product markets.
In this backdrop and in alignment with trends on greening of firms and industries, we are happy to intimate that National Productivity Council (NPC) has been directed by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, on the advise of Prime Minister’s office to prepare and publish Indian Eco-Products Directory as an initiative to promote & showcase industrial environmental ingenuity and Eco-Products from India.
Accordingly, NPC, which is a founding member of the Asian Productivity Organisation (APO) based in Tokyo , is evolving the design of the Indian Eco-Products Directory on the concept and thematic platform being popularized by APO in South East Asian Region. APO began publishing Eco-Products Directory since 2004 and has been collating such product developments emerging in Asia-Pacific region. The fourth edition of such a Directory has been developed and printed in year 2008.These Directories have been prepared based on the products exhibited in the Eco-Products International Fairs held in the respective countries ( Malaysia , Singapore , Thailand , Vietnam and Philippines ). The fifth Fair has been held in Philippines this year in March 2009 and an APO Directory for 2009 has recently been launched on APO website. We propose to organize EPIF in India in 2011. Prior to organizing the EPIF, we intend to prepare and print the Eco-Products Directory of Indian products in 2009-10. We are pleased to intimate that the Eco-Product directories published by APO during 2004 – 2009 can be viewed / downloaded from the APO website www.apo-tokyo.org.
Towards developing the Indian version of the Eco-Products directory, we seek your cooperation by way of enabling the building of the information that could be published in respect of any product of your esteemed organization that meets the requirements to be categorized as Eco-Product, as per following considerations.
The definition we seek to adopt on Eco-Products is as follows :‘any product which is made, used or disposed in a way that reduces the environmental burden than the conventional products’. Accordingly products in your organization portfolio that have been earmarked for domestic consumption and / or international markets, and which suit the above definition and seek to match the broad criteria set out for eco-friendly products as given below could be considered for inclusion in the said Eco-Products Directory of India. An expert Committee towards selection of product entries shall assist the process and test / examine the claims according to the criteria on the basis of which the product entry(ies) is / are submitted for inclusion.
The broad set of 6 criterion that can be used to classify a product as eco-friendly is set out below with a view that such products are being manufactured without compromising functional capabilities. In addition to the following list of criterion we enclose illustrative examples as per Annexure - I to serve as indicative references.
6 Criterion towards identifying and showcasing Eco-Products (as per APO )
- Avoiding and/or reducing the use of non-renewable or scarce resources
- Enhancing the material closed loop by recycling and reusing waste
- Increasing resource efficiency including that of energy and materials
- Using more durable materials with fewer maintenance requirements
- Promoting the use of renewable resources and energy
- Minimizing adverse impact on biodiversity and ecosystems
We believe the envisaged Indian Eco-Products Directory shall serve as a useful marketing tool in both domestic and international trade arenas. It would be an important reference within the country towards serving future private and public sector green procurement regimes. Besides enabling the building of brand image and brand equity of Indian eco-products, the Directory shall also bring insights on the range of emerging eco-product variety and on the trends in this direction. It is expected that the Indian Eco-Products Directory would especially serve as a useful reference document for green business linkages and trade in eco-products amongst Indian firms and international partners, and would be a contributing tool towards enabling a reach for Indian eco-products to various countries from Asia-Pacific and South East Asian region to the Western European, African and American markets.
We shall thus appreciate if your organization chooses to provide requisite information as sought through a questionnaire developed for the purpose and enclosed at Annexure – II . The essence and substantive information so received on eco-products from the firms, upon further recommendations from an expert technical / review committee based on a suitable evaluation process, would be published in the first of its kind Indian Eco-products Directory. With the proposed wider circulation of this Directory, it is expected that it would also become a useful tool to promote environmental ingenuity of India , as well as enhance competitiveness of our firms and industry in the global arena.
We await a positive response by post / email and look forward to the pleasure of working together on this prestigious project.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
